The Land-Wheelwright Laboratories Land-Wheelwright Laboratories patented an extensive sheet polarizer, consulted for Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and, in the mid-1930’s, began making polarizing camera filters for the Eastman Kodak Company and “Polaroid Day Glasses” for the American Optical Company. Deciding that his greatest opportunities lay in investigating polarized light, he set up a laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and went into business with a young Harvard physics instructor, George Wheelwright III. Fascinated by science and invention since childhood, Land went to Harvard seeking a field in which he could make significant intellectual contributions and establish his reputation and fortune. In spite of the public demand for the new camera generated by all the publicity, the first instant camera did not appear on the market until 1948.Įdwin Herbert Land demonstrates his instant-print process.Įdwin Land, born into a middle-class family from Bridgeport, Connecticut, attended Harvard University but did not graduate. The society’s program declared that this demonstration was a new kind of photography, as revolutionary as the transition from wet plates to daylight-loading film. Fifty seconds later, he removed two 8-x-10-inch sheets of paper from a metal chamber attached to the back of the camera, peeled them apart, and displayed a large sepia image of himself. Land sat in front of the camera and, using a cable release, snapped his own picture. This first demonstration of instant photography was made with a large Deardorff portrait camera on a tripod, flanked by floodlights. Biographical / Historical: Prior to the establishment of a city fire department in 1854, volunteer fire companies did the work of putting out fires in Ann Arbor. He said AAFD is thankful for the assistance the Department received from surrounding communities in responding to the fire. Kennedy said the origin and cause of the fire will be difficult to determine, but the department had a fire investigator on the scene as of Friday afternoon. two years ago where six firefighters were critically injured, so we backed out and went on the defensive.” “The vape shop has a lot of highly combustible material in it,” Kennedy said. Kennedy said the fire department initially had to delay their investigation of the fire because the department was concerned about flammable materials, such as e-cigarette batteries, inside Vape City. “We’re tearing up the street to shut off the gas lines and then once the gas line shuts off we’re going to bring in an excavator and start tearing the building apart for hotspots.” “We’ve been here since 7 (a.m.) - the roof has collapsed and so that’s what we’re dealing with now,” Kennedy said. He said the fire department still does not know exactly where or how the fire started, though he said the extent of the damage would likely result in the entire property being demolished. Kennedy said there were no casualties or injuries to either civilians or first responders. He told The Daily the fire was noticed by a passerby and no one was inside the building at the time the fire started. The building, which was completely destroyed by the blaze, housed two local businesses - Madras Masala Indian restaurant and Vape City smoke shop.ĪAFD chief Mike Kennedy was responding to the fire Friday afternoon. You have to think, the guys that work here went through a process that arguably no one else in this whole industry has gone through. I’m not an analog guy and don’t want to give away too many secrets, but the recreation of that EQ goes beyond the range of the knobs that these people cross. We held off for several years, and now we have launched MixBus 32C and it has a modeled software emulation of that original Harrison EQ. We also had some longtime customers who had the 32 series console and the knew exactly where you were supposed to turn those knobs to make it happen, they kept asking us to make that 32 series EQ. People knew about that 32C EQ and wanted it to be in MixBus. When we came out with that it was a huge success, but there were people who said well cool, but I have to have the harrison 32C sound. A simplified EQ and compressor and we made and introductory level audio workstation that has all the features that you could want but it also has a Harrison mixer in it. We launched a product called MixBus about 5 years ago and that was a workstation that allows you to cut, copy, paste, import and export, it has all those things in it and we customized the mixer to have our channel strip. They say it’s all about the recording and it is, it’s all about the musician of course that’s more important than the gear you use, and when I listen to that selection of things, I really do hear a sound to that. I listen to all those records and I hear a sound. I can tell you from some of the better documented ones that a lot of the Queen stuff, Another One Bites the Dust, Sade’s Sweetest Taboo Album, Michael Jackson stuff, Thriller and Bad, and then you’ve got AC/DC’s Back in Black. You’re taking the same piece of gear and with a button push using it twice. The inline console is basically the tape machine inserted into the middle of the console path and you can either monitor the playback from the tape machine or you can monitor the microphone in the room. Harrison came up with this concept called an inline console, the basic idea being instead of having a fader for the microphone which feeds into a tape machine and comes back through another mix board, he decided you could save space and do a lot of cool tricks, share a lot of electronics, and get dual use out of your console. He kicked off his own company, took a prototype around the world and pitched the idea in the 70’s. Geoff decided not to manufacture that and that irritated Dave enough that he wanted to go make it himself. He had a really cool idea for mixing consoles that would make things go faster and smoother in the studio, it was intended to be made up of the new syncable machines you’d have not just 16 but 24-32 tracks recording at a time, so he developed the Harrison 32 Series console (he actually took the idea to Geoff Harnett). He also had a company called Studio Supply and he would go build studios and install these MCI consoles and tape machines. Harrison was the designer for some of later MCI console models. Dave Harrison was collaborating with Geoff Harnett and they were building MCI consoles. I’ve been here about 15-16 years, which is a long time to work somewhere but short in the scheme of things. I came in relatively late in the Harrison company. ![]() I can’t wait to learn more about MixBus and how it can help you make your best record ever. Harrison also makes a unique digital audio workstation, The MixBus32C, following an analog paradigm that embodies form, function, and sound. Performance may vary if you utilize a different storage system, like YugabyteDB, that doesn’t necessitate vacuuming or employ bitmap scan. Response time can fluctuate due to factors like query patterns, cached data, concurrent workload, and database system configuration.įor instance, when working with PostgreSQL, or a PostgreSQL-compatible database, the response time may be influenced by vacuuming, the utilization of a GIN index with bitmap scan, and the number of Rows Removed by Index Recheck. To evaluate performance and scalability, I prioritize running small reproducible examples and analyzing the execution plan rather than relying solely on response time. Index Scan using words_word_trgm on words (actual time=12.604.119.505 rows=56 loops=1)Ī GIN index on trigrams is useful for generic text search, but if all you need is a prefix, a direct index will be more efficient. It can show more false positive (There’s still work in progress to optimize it-see Github issue #7850): yugabyte=> explain (analyze, costs off, summary off) ![]() Because YugabyteDB distributes rows and not pages, it doesn’t do any bitmap scans. The default sharding method with YugabyteDB applies a hash function on the first column of the index which allows YugabyteDB to distribute and provide scalable point queries. YugabyteDB re-uses PostgreSQL for the query layer, with additional sharding options to distribute and replicate for scalability and high availability. In PostgreSQL, the asc option is not mandatory because it’s the default. yugabyte=# create index words_word on words ( word asc ) If you know the prefix, indexing for LIKE is easy because PostgreSQL can transform it to a range scan an ascending or descending index provides fast and scalable access. Only some details about the storage implementation are different in the execution plan. The examples provided here work the same on the PostgreSQL database. Please note that I will run the demos on YugabyteDB, which is PostgreSQL-compatible. Yugabyte=# \copy words(word) from '/usr/share/dict/words' Id bigint generated always as identity primary key I’ll use a simple dataset, the Linux dictionary of English words installed in the dict package: yugabyte=# \! sudo dnf install -y words Let’s take a look to see how, for situations where the wildcard is either in front or at the end of the pattern. It’s also a nice alternative to event schemas used solely for type casting which can be sometimes slow. With the LIKE operator, you can compare a string to a pattern that includes some wildcards and then index for these access patterns. It opens new possibilities like ability to query events’ data and metadata via SQL interface and RES interface in the future. It removes all the disadvantages which using JSON brought as compared to YAML serialization within binary column. Running on JSONClient with PreserveTypes provides seamless type handling. ![]() You can see that although Capture One does an acceptable job of reducing noise in the image, there is some softness introduced. I have observed that with the noise reduction being applied to some images above 6400 ISO on my Canon R5, the results feel slightly less amazing, but still very good and the best out there. I’m not convinced that AI is the answer to everything, at least not yet. Scepticismįirstly, I’m getting a bit tired of hearing how everything has AI these days, it seems such a gimmick now and just an excuse to shift products. In the past I have tried Neat Image and Noise Ninja and I think at the time they were pretty good. It had popped into my mind as I had watched a really good video about the software (more on that later).
